How to Hygge
You may have heard the word Hygge being thrown around a lot of the internet, especially on Pinterest. What is Hygge, and how the heck do you say it? Well, we have the answers for you, as well as some tips on how to incorporate this new trend into your life.
The word hygge comes from a Danish word meaning "to give courage, comfort, joy" and it is pronounced (hoo-gah) kind of like "hug". So essentially it's that warm cozy feeling that comes with fall, warm socks and a cup of tea, among other things.
Denmark is consistently ranked as the happiest country in the world, so they must be doing something right! Here are some ways you can be “be hygge” and embrace this Danish lifestyle concept:
Light some candles - candles create a sense of warmth and comfort. The soft glow is relaxing, and the aromatic fragrances will fill your home with coziness.
Cozy up - there’s nothing quite like curling up with a piping cup of tea or coffee under a warm blanket. Put down your phone and take some time to just enjoy the moment.
Set the mood - listen to calming music and let it transport you. Search for a hygge playlist, coffee shop playlist or just acoustic music. It will both calm and uplift you.
Unplug - an important aspect of hygge is to take a step back from your devices. Technology plays such a big role in our life, but it’s making us miss out on the little things.
Get comfortable - to create a truly hygge environment, you have to be comfortable and cozy. Add soft blankets and plush pillows to your bed and couch to lull yourself into relaxation.
Be hygge with friends - hygge isn’t something you only enjoy alone. It’s a lifestyle which extends to social gatherings. Have friends over for a dinner party. Bake with a loved one and just enjoy each other's company.
Take up a hobby - turn off your tv and turn to something a little more “old fashioned” like sewing, knitting or painting. It will take your mind away to a more relaxing place and you’ll be surprised how great it feels to get a break from the television.
Read - reading will transport you into another time and place. It can revitalize your mind and soul. Curl up with a good book under those cozy new blankets and immerse yourself completely.
Slow down - we live in a fast-paced world with deadlines and constant contact. While you may not be able to implement hygge into your work life, implementing it at home can relieve a great deal of stress. Slow down once you get home. Put your phone away, enjoy your family and the little things.
Be here now - there may be things that are traditionally hygge, but really it’s about being here now, in the moment. Adding that mindset to your life will help you feel more relaxed, more present and happier.
Stay cozy!
