Follow These Tips to Stay Organized All Year Round
When we think about New Year’s resolutions, we often think of drastic, and sometimes unrealistic changes to instantaneously make. Losing 20 lbs. in a matter of weeks, racking up rainy-day savings, and actually going to social events are things that we've all had on our yearly wish lists. But while changing your diet, cutting back on frivolous spending, and making more time for hobbies or friends are wonderful goals, one seemingly minor resolution we can all commit to is being organized.
Organization does not instantly attribute to owning a series of jars or bins neatly labeled and perfectly positioned throughout your home or workspace. Organization also applies to the way you utilize your time. Let’s face it, time management and productivity are two things that the average person struggles with juggling daily. The amount of time you spend on an errand or task and your efficiency are all dependent on your organizational skills. If you’re looking for some motivation and tools to ramp up those time management and organizational efforts, start with the steps below.
Declutter
The first step to getting organized is to declutter YOUR MIND. Sometimes the many things on our to-do lists sound great in theory, but when we are faced with them, we become overwhelmed. Other times, we might not be in the correct mental space to be as productive as we would like. Take a moment, breathe, and know that you got this!
- Do yourself a favor and start small. Focus on one task or one portion of your house and get started.
- We all have things that we don’t necessarily need. Ask yourself if an item is for long-term or short-term use. If it’s not serving a concrete purpose, take a page from Elsa’s book and LET IT GO.
- Reorganize in a way that makes sense to you. We all have our preferences
Create a Schedule & Stick to It
Structure and Routine go hand in hand. Honing into these skills by building a schedule will allow you to take control of your life. And even on those days you feel like skipping some of your daily tasks, don't do it.
Use those tools
Whether it be a to-do list you keep on your phone, a calendar you keep at your desk, or a planner you keep in your bag, having a visual idea of your schedule and important dates is an effective way to stay organized. WRITE IT DOWN. Calendars, planners, and smart devices are your friends. Don’t be afraid to tell Alexa to set that reminder for you.
